Swedish Massage

Swedish massage, also known as a classic massage, is the most common type of massage practiced in the United States and the Western world. It is based on a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology and is performed on a massage table with oil or lotion.

Swedish massage therapists employ a variety of techniques throughout the massage, including (but certainly not limited to) long gliding strokes towards the heart to promote circulation and lymph flow, compression on major muscle groups and attachment sights to gently release tense muscles, and passive joint movements to keep joints healthy and lubricated.

There is no particular order or protocol for a Swedish massage, and each therapist will bring their unique energy and toolset. Some therapists will incorporate deep tissue and other advanced techniques as requested and on targeted areas. Still, the overall intention of a Swedish massage is to relax, energize, and loosen tightened muscles gently and compassionately.

What are the benefits of Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage boasts loads of benefits for both the mind and the body.  On a physical level, a Swedish massage will help reduce muscle soreness and stiffness, improve blood and lymph circulation, reduce blood pressure, and assist with the dissolution of scar tissue and adhesions (knots).

On an equally important but more subtle level, a Swedish massage can help to reduce anxiety and depression, which in turn can promote a sense of relaxation and wellbeing that encourages the rest and reset response the body and mind require to heal and rejuvenate.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is based on principles of Western anatomy and is the broad term for therapeutic or clinical bodywork. Its techniques target connective tissue and fascia and are best suited for clients rehabilitating from soft tissue injuries or those suffering from chronic pain.

Since deep tissue is an umbrella term meant to encompass a variety of techniques, it is important to remember that no two deep tissue massages will be the same. There is a world of different approaches to deep tissue massage, and each massage therapist comes to the table with a unique set of skills, specialized training, and a well-developed philosophy about their approach to the work.

No matter the technique, the goals for a deep tissue massage are therapeutic, and the massage may involve client participation, sensations of discomfort, and some residual soreness.

Trigger Point Massage

Trigger point massage is a technique for releasing muscle tension. It consists of applying deep pressure to trigger points or taut bands in the body that are sore and often refer to pain elsewhere. Trigger point massage can be used on the hand or elbow, forearm, knuckles, fists, thumbs, and fingers. This type of massage therapy has been shown to help with back problems and postural issues.

Trigger point massage is a unique technique commonly used for people who suffer from back pain and postural problems. Trigger point massage involves applying deep pressure to trigger points or taut bands in the body that are sore and refer to pain elsewhere. Trigger point massage can be used by hand or with various tools such as elbow, forearm, knuckles, fists, thumbs, and fingers.

What is a Trigger Point?
Trigger points are located at specific spots on the body where muscle tension accumulates. These areas may not necessarily show any physical signs. Still, when trigger points are compressed, other muscles contract involuntarily, leading to intense shooting pains and tightness throughout the area.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage sessions can be either side-lying while snuggling a full-body pillow or with a specially designed body cushion. In this position, the mother-to-be is facing prone on the table, supported by the abdomen and breasts, and a face rest cradles the head.

During a side-lying massage, moms change sides halfway through the session. The long body pillow is placed between the knees and snuggled up to the chin, which provides appropriate draping for the mom’s chest. If a unique cushion is used, the client is face down (prone) the entire session.

Prenatal or pregnancy massage therapy is an excellent way to find relaxation during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Expectant moms typically find low back tension, sciatica in the hips, and swelling in the calves, which are usual areas of concern. The extra forward weight in the abdomen pulls on the lumbar muscles, overworked hip muscles contract and pinch the sciatic nerve, and fluid retention in the calves, ankles, and feet increases due to pressure on the veins as the baby in the uterus grows.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is a therapy that uses smooth, heated stones, usually made of basalt, to provide warmth and relax the muscles. During the treatment, the therapist places the hot stones on specific points along your body, known as acupressure points, to promote relaxation and relieve tension. Additionally, the therapist may also use the stones as an extension of their hands, applying gentle pressure and gliding the stones along your muscles; this combination of heat and pressure helps to ease muscle stiffness, improve circulation, and calm the mind.
